Pretty Little Things Excerpt Three (Wounds Scene)
“What are your plans for the day,
little one?” I asked, and she startled.
“I have a report I need to finish
on the adverse effects of corporal punishment used on children.” I laughed and
shook my head, my eyes going back to the television. “Yeah, so that will be
fun. But if Connor and Grace aren’t back, I can always skip school tomorrow.”
“Not a chance.”
“I wasn’t asking.”
I looked over at her, her eyebrow
raised in challenge.
“You had a private tutor.”
“I had antisocial tendencies and a
habit of challenging authority.” I laughed as the credits rolled on the screen
in front of us.
“I don’t doubt that.”
We fell silent as we both sat,
unmoving. “So this guy…” I let my voice trail off.
“He’s just a guy.” She shrugged as
she pulled on a loose thread on the blanket.
“Is he a good guy?”
“Are you?” she shot back.
“That’s a loaded question.” I stood
up, stretching, and when I looked down at her, her smile fell. “What?”
“Did that hurt?”
I sighed as I thought of the marks
that covered my back. “Don’t.” I walked over to the shelves of movies, scanning
the titles. I didn’t know if it bothered me more that she was asking about them
or that she looked upset over my injuries. I was no one for her to feel sorry
for. While I’d received them for not doing what I was told, I’d earned them by
following through with the orders. But answering that question perplexed me. If
you take a child and never show him affection, any attention received is
positive in his eyes. Coupling that with the twisted abusive behavior and
dominance that was instilled in me so young, I learned to derive gratification
from receiving pain as well as giving. It was a release, a way to atone for my
sins.
She stood and walked up to my side.
My scars should have been a warning to not get close to someone like me, but
Annabel saw my dominant side as a reflection of my overprotective nature toward
her. My eyes closed as her hand ran softly over my back. Her featherlight touch
on my own wounds more painful than when I had received them.
“Annabel, stop,” I bit out, but she
continued on, her fingers trailing over the raised welts. My body stiffened,
not wanting someone to give me affection I didn’t deserve. It turned my
stomach, and for once I was completely thrown off guard. So I did what I knew
best, and I instilled fear in her.
“I said fucking stop,” I seethed as
I grabbed her by her shoulders and slammed her small body against the movies,
causing the shelves to shake. Her green eyes were wide with fright, and now I was
the one desperate to touch. Her fear was palpable, and while I knew I was
pushing away the one person who even remotely began to understand me, it was
for her own good. She didn’t have to understand as long as she listened. But
listening to me was something Annabel rarely did anymore. She’d become too
comfortable in my presence, and now she ignored the alarms that would set a
normal person on edge. That was what terrified me about her seeing this guy. I
had no idea what kind of person he was, but I knew Annie wouldn’t be as
cautious as she should be.
“Annabel…” I rested my forehead
against the case, my body hovering over hers, caging her in with my arms on her
shoulders. Her name came out like a plea for help.
“I-I’m sorry.”
I lifted my head and looked at her.
The fear-induced stutter let me know I had succeeded in making her understand.
I took a step back from her,
running my hand along my jaw before turning and leaving the room, desperate to
put distance between us.

“Are
you sure you want to drive?” Abel asks me.
“Yes, you’ve driven the entire trip.
Let me finish this last leg; you look exhausted.”
“I’m fine, kitten, really.”
“Stop being so damn stubborn -- I’m
driving.”
“Fine,” he responds and hands me the
keys.
I take them as we leave the gas
station and climb up into his massive Ford Raptor. Once I’m settled with my
seat belt on and the mirrors adjusted, I start it up and pull out. I’ve driven
his truck a few times and it’s always a blast. I thoroughly enjoy its large
size and feel, just like I do Abel. I speed up and pull onto the highway ready to
get us home. Abel is staring at me.
“Why are you mugging me?”
“I’m not,” he laughs. “And what’s
with the word ‘mugging’?”
I burst out laughing. “What? You
were staring me down.”
“Well, don’t forget I can stare at
you whenever I want -- you’re mine.”
He scoots closer and lifts the
center console, coming over to my side. His breath is hot on my skin, as it
washes over my neck, then he begins to nibble on my ear. I take a hand off of
the wheel and touch his face, caressing the hint of stubble that lines his jaw.

It’s hard to keep my eyes open with my

My Review :
You know when you read the first book in a series and you are dying to get your hands on the next one because the first one was just so damn Good? Well that is how I feel about this series. When I read Axel I fell in love with Harper and her writing style as well as her characters in the book. I knew Cage was coming next and I was craving his book soooo Much. When I got my Email yesterday with My ARC of Cage I dropped everything I was reading and doing and Jumped right in head and feet first because I knew It was going to be THAT DAMN GOOD, and guess what Harper has not disappointed me !!!!!!!
We first Met Greg in Axel's Book. We found out that he had lost his sister to an abusive husband and He had vowed that although he could not protect his sister that all future woman in his life would get his protection. In Axel we met Greg through Izzy, she was like a sister to him and he had helped her through some difficult times.
I fell in love with Greg in that book alone, But in this book I fell head over heals for him. He is 100% swoon worthy, he is sweet, protective, loving, caring, total 100% alpha Hot Man!!!!!
“Trust me when I tell you that I have lived a life that makes me know when something is worth fighting for. I took one look at you and knew you were worth it to me. It’s new, I get that, but I know you feel it too.”
Greg has found his soul mate and he will stop at nothing to get her and to protect her. He wants to make her his and his alone. She is someone he craves. Swoon points big time he calls her Beauty!!!!

Little Cohen, Who you will meet also, he is so damn cute, funny, I love the stuff that comes out of his mouth and you will be laughing right along while reading like I was. Like I always say the things outta the mouths of babes.
Another thing I LOVED was even though this was Greg's Book we still saw some of Axel, Izzy, and the rest of the Corps Men and woman. Totally makes you love the story even more with all of the best characters in a story. One thing I truly LOVE about Harper and her writing style is that Everything runs smoothly together in the story and even having all the characters it is not over done , but at the same time you still don't want the story to end either.
Harper Has done it again, I lOVED Axel, I LOVE Cage and now I will be not so patiently waiting for Beck !!!!!!!
A side note:
I Absolutely LOVED getting a snippet with Cage and Braxxon Breaker from the Breakneck MC If you have read the Breakneck series By Crystal Spears then you got a little treat with Cage in Withstanding. If you have not read that series I strongly suggest it.
one more thing If you have not read this series YOU MUST!!!!! If you like Kristen Ashley's Alphs Men then you surely will not be disappointed at all!!!!!

Harper
lives in small town Georgia just a short drive from her hometown of Peachtree

I’m just a boring chick that loves to read almost as much as I love to write! I have a nasty mouth, and a love for all things man candy!
2. What do you do when you are not writing? READING! I will always be a reader at heart!
3. Do you have a day job as well? I do not. Well, unless you count mommy as a job.
4. Can you tell us about your upcoming book? I can tell you that Beck is up next. I know a lot of people are getting frustrated with Dee and her running but have faith my loves… she’s had a heavy load on her shoulders. Other than those two… there are some big, unexpected changes coming. J

6. What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment? Every single time I get a message from a reader I feel like it’s the best compliment. There are TONS of books out there and they gave ME a chance. Regardless of what they loved and didn’t love, that right there is the biggest compliment. You know, there has been a lot that is hard to take, at times, as an author. These stories are in a way a small piece of me that I am saying ‘hey, judge me!’ I read all my reviews and yes, some of them hurt like a bitch but I take it in and try to make it better next.
7. Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers? Don’t give up. There are times when you feel like you just can’t do it. Or when you get a particularly rough review, sales or down, or that damn block just wont die. BUT DO NOT GIVE UP.
8. Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans? I love you! I know, I know… pretty unoriginal but it’s the truth. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for each reader and fan. So, I love you!
9. If the author could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Hmmmm…… Kristen Ashley, so she can tell me where the hell I can find Kane ‘Tack’ Allen in real life!
10. If you had to go back and do it all over, is there any aspect of your novel or getting it published that you would change? There are small parts that I would change. I wouldn’t trust as easy. Or believe that every person willing to give you ‘advice’ is really looking for the best for you. As for my writing, I wrote my characters how THEY wanted to be told and in the end, I’m proud of myself and them. <3

Without
another moment’s hesitation, I marched myself outside. The screen door closed
with a loud thwack behind me as I closed the distance between the house and my
jeep. When he twisted his head at sound of the slamming door, my determined boots
skidded to an abrupt halt, causing loose gravel to crunch heavily beneath my
feet.
Paralyzing blue eyes held me in place,
stunning me with their raw beauty. I had no idea what to compare them to, but
they were unlike any color I’d ever seen before, and far more beautiful than
any sky or ocean.
Whoa.
It was sticky hot outside today. The humidity in the air
had beads of sweat tickling my upper lip, but there was no denying the chill
bumps that pebbled across my skin as those striking blue eyes roamed my body.
Standing to face me properly, his tan arms flexed impressively as he wiped his
filthy hands with a greasy rag. The sight of a man doing that should absolutely
not be a turn on.
But
God help me…it was.
Well-worn jeans rested low on his lean hips, forcing my
lips to part on a sigh. I was drinking in as much of him as I could.
So
why was I still so damn thirsty?
His
dirty ball cap was pulled down low on his brow, but not low enough to conceal
those gorgeous blues. They were big and bright and they shined back at me like
a beacon in a storm. I licked my parched lips in appreciation at the beautiful
man standing before me. His perfect lips turned up at the corners and I knew it
right then.
I was in deep shit.
That smile could definitely be defined as a panty
dropper. I’d never had an urge such as this. I felt so drawn to this stranger,
and for reasons I could not even begin to comprehend, I wanted to reach out and
touch him. My hands flexed at my sides. I wanted to do a hell of a lot more
than just touch him. Thankfully my mind finally sent warning signals to the
rest of my body. I was standing there, gawking at him, like a lust crazed fool.
“Who the hell are you?”

Holden is one sexy, caring, HOT Cowboy. He left Texas after dealing with his own issues and moved near his cousin Archer, by night he manage's Archer's bar by day he helps out on Maddie's parents farm. He is the idea guy.
Madison Waters working for one of the most prestigious law firms in Boston as a research assistant, and in a few short months, she would finally graduate from Harvard and collect her law degree. She had her life all planned out, until she has to take a sudden trip back home to her parents.
Once there she runs into Holden on the farm, things get heated when she goes all independent woman on him. Holden loves it and he feels a connection to her.
Things between Maddie and Holden heat up and Maddie has to decide if being in love or following her plan is what is best for her. It is not an easy road, there is some angst, drama, and laughs. There is steamy scenes that will leave you hot and bothered.
Usually I am not one for people falling in love instantly in books but this story was well written, each and every character played an important part in the story of bringing these two together.
For a debut novel K. Langston did a fantastic job with the writing of this story. I can not wait for the next one in this series with Katy and Archer's story.

About the Author
I've worked in property management for the last decade. Married to my soul mate and gentle giant for 12 years, the man has never been, nor will he ever be, the romantic type. However, we still have a very passionate marriage and we love each other fiercely. We have two beautiful children who drive us absolutely insane, but we love them dearly and we are certain our life would suck without them.
I love music. I have a broad range of taste so I listen to all genres, but I love country the most.
Most of my friends and family will tell you that I'm a bit loud. I take that back...I'm very LOUD. I tend to always say what others are thinking and I never sugarcoat anything.
Writing has given me the release I've been craving all of these years. An outlet to express myself the way I want to, the way I need to. It's like therapy for me and my life was forever changed the moment I typed that first line.
